Primers and undercoats are key allies for many of your decorating projects. Sometimes, not using a primer will cost you time and money, especially if you’re using designer paint. You probably have a characterless IKEA BILLY in oak veneer, and every time you pick a book from the shelves, you think: ‘I want to paint this bookcase!’. If you go straight for some Farrow & Ball Oval Room Blue Modern Eggshell (it looks fantastic on a bookcase), what happens is that the paint won’t stick to the veneer. Before using your favourite designer paint colour, you need an adhesion promoter (a primer) to make the paint adhere to the trickier surfaces.
