Colours: they seem to be quite crucial in decorating, huh? And they can be pretty confusing as well. You’re not alone: the feeling of being overwhelmed by too many choices of paint colours is quite common, don’t worry. Once again, splat is here to guide you through colour choices and make your life easier. We genuinely believe that decorating should be the fun thing you get excited about during the weekend, not a stressful experience – work is already enough for that.

first step: grab a colour fan

If you’re in the initial stage of your project and don’t know which colour would make your main wall or front door stand out, you might want to order a premium colour fan. With a the colours in your hands, choosing will be much easier. Look at your paint colours under different lights, natural and artificial, place them next to the other colours in your scheme and see what looks best. When you’ve done, just put your colour fan in your decorating cupboard and take it out again whenever you want to jump into an exciting new project. They will be the starting point of all your future decorating journeys.

step 2: order some paint tester pots

Once this first colour choosing phase is over, and you will have narrowed down the selection of colours, you go on and order a few paint tester pots. Especially if you’re dealing with a big DIY project, like the complete design of a room, you should test the colours first. Painting a whole wall without trying the colour could turn into a big mistake. And mistakes cost you precious time and some money too – money that you could spend on your next project, for example. We know that you’re very excited to see the final result, but don’t rush in. Grab some sample paint pots and start with the testing phase.

pro tip: how to use paint sample pots?

Since we’re here to help, here is the pro-tip you need. Rather than applying straight to the wall, we recommend applying two coats of each of your paint sample pots to a sheet of lining paper pre-cut by the splat team and then leaving to dry. Then stick your sheets up in the room you’re planning to paint. Move them to other areas of the room to see how the colour changes throughout the day and under different types of light. Reaching that morning glow-up in your bedroom was easier than you thought, right?
