Have you taken pity on an old inherited piece of furniture or want to add a personal touch to a new one? Furniture paint is the answer. Browse our selection of high-quality and eco-friendly paint by brands like Rustoleum, Dulux, and Farrow & Ball, and start your furniture upcycling journey!

Upcycling with furniture paint

Upcycling with furniture paint is not only environmentally responsible, but it also means you can re-invent that well-built piece for future generations to use and enjoy. Maybe you’re planning an IKEA flat-pack hack, restoring the wood on a treasured heirloom or reinventing a fitted piece of furniture like an in-built cupboard. Perhaps you just want to renovate your wooden furniture with a simple finish or maybe create a statement piece with paint effects and detailing using a brush, sponge or roller. Well, furniture paint – together with some creativity and a big DIY energy – is what will do the trick. Choose the perfect furniture paint colours, grab a brush, and start creating!

From sanding to furniture primer: prep is key

Whether you’re painting wooden, laminate or even rattan furniture, prep is key. Before you start applying furniture paint, there are a few basic products you need to add to your kit. Start with some sandpaper and lightly sanding the surface, then degrease your furniture first with the right cleaning products. If you have wood with knots in, you should spot prime them with knotting solution, and you may need some wood filler to ensure a smooth surface. Then furniture primer is your best friend, and you can find some great ones in here. If you’re a minimalist, we have lots of products that combine primer, undercoat and topcoat in one single paint tin.

Satin, gloss, chalky or matt? All the furniture paint finishes

When choosing your furniture paint, consider the how shiny you want your pieces of furniture to look. Our paint comes in many finishes with different sheen levels, and the choice is only yours. The less shiny is a matt finish has around 3% sheen, followed by eggshell at 15-20% sheen. Satin furniture paint is 30-50% sheen, but if you want the shine-bright-like-a-diamond effect you need to go for gloss furniture paint, which can be anything between 70-90% sheen. A rule of thumb that will make the furniture paint finish choice easier: the shinier the finish, the more durable and easier it will be to clean the surface. So, if you’re doing up some kitchen cabinets, maybe flat matt is not the best idea – unless you don’t use your kitchen.
